Epic and legacy data, as well as a subset of National Drug Codes, are mapped to the corresponding RxNorm values. Medications within the hierarchy can be found through the source coding system or by searching on the generic or brand name.

Procedures are identified by descriptions and codes of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, ICD-9-CM procedure codes, ICD-10-PCS codes, HCPCS codes, LMR codes and OnCall codes. Epic classifications are also used.

For consistency and reliability, analytical processes work to bring procedures with synonyms together under a single code and description.

All possible principal diagnoses are divided into twenty-five mutually exclusive Major Diagnostic Codes (MDCs) based on single organ systems and specialties. Together, these MDCs contain about 500 DRGs, classified according to diagnoses and the employment of similar hospital resources. The MDCs were designed to help with Medicare payments.
